Coconut Creek, FL – December 6, 2010 – December 5th officially marks the fifteenth anniversary of the publication of Save Your Hands! the leading guide to injury prevention and ergonomics for manual therapists. Like many great ideas, Save Your Hands! was born from necessity in 1995 when Lauriann Greene began promoting self-care and injury prevention to the massage industry after she suffered a massage work-related injury.

An inspired Greene wrote Save Your Hands!, which was the first text to offer comprehensive information on this subject to manual therapists. In 2008, Greene collaborated with Richard W. Goggins, CPE, LMP, on Save Your Hands! The Complete Guide to Injury Prevention and Ergonomics for Manual Therapists, 2nd Edition. The second edition is updated with the latest proven-effective injury prevention techniques for massage therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nurses and other healthcare practitioners who perform hands-on therapy. Since 1995, Save Your Hands! has sold over 100,000 copies, and is now used as a required textbook for students in manual treatment training programs and schools worldwide.

Co-authors Lauriann Greene and Richard W. Goggins explain: “The physically demanding work manual therapists do puts them at risk for musculoskeletal injury. But injury is not inevitable! In Save Your Hands!, we offer research-based strategies and tips that have been proven to prevent injury. Manual therapists invest a great deal of time and money building their careers – our goal is to educate and train these professionals to help them protect and prolong their careers.”

Save Your Hands! is now much more than a textbook. The company offers online home study courses, live workshops and a new Certified Injury Prevention Instructor Program (CIPI) for therapists that wish to enhance their career and earn extra income by teaching injury prevention to other manual therapists.

For employers of manual therapists (spas, clinics, etc.), Save Your Hands! offers ergonomics consulting and training services to lower injury risk and reduce workers’ compensation claims, absenteeism and turnover while increasing productivity and improving morale.

More About Save Your Hands!® Continuing Education

Did you know that 77% of massage therapists experience symptoms related to their profession? The AMTA is encouraging therapists and instructors in injury prevention with this new program. We want you to ‘live long and prosper’ in your career. Now you can learn how to prevent injury, and to instruct other therapists in this important aspect of their career.

Save Your Hands!® CIPI Program Trains Massage Therapists to Teach Self-Care and Injury Prevention

A new program by the most trusted name in self-care and ergonomics trains massage therapists how to teach injury prevention to other manual therapists.

Save Your Hands!® announces the affordable Certified Injury Prevention Instructor (CIPI) program, designed to provide CIPI instructors the skills, curriculum, and marketing savvy to perform successful independent Save Your Hands!® workshops or to be hired as a trainer by spas, clinics, and schools.

The CIPI certification includes three online courses, including one by renowned massage marketing/business expert Cherie Sohnen-Moe on how instructors can market themselves as a CIPI. The certification process concludes with a live, hands-on weekend workshop. The first live workshops will be held in Corona, California (at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa) on November 13-14, 2010 and in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on February 12-13, 2011. The entire certification provides 50 CEUs.

According to Lauriann Greene, CIPI Program Director and one of the foremost experts on injury prevention for manual therapists, “Seventy seven percent of manual therapists and bodyworkers report symptoms or injury as a result of their work. But these injuries can be prevented. There’s a great need for more capable instructors to teach effective, proven methods and tips to prevent injury. By becoming certified, qualified massage therapists and other manual therapists can help other therapists to protect and prolong their careers while creating an additional income stream and saving their own hands.”

CIPI graduates get ongoing support with tools from the saveyourhands.com web site, including an online directory that potential employers use to locate CIPIs, a forum to communicate with other CIPI’s, and access to Save Your Hands!® co-authors and expert instructors Lauriann Greene and Rick Goggins for questions and advice.

Schools and spas also benefit from training a CIPI

For schools, the program provides a way to train an instructor to incorporate effective injury prevention information into the school’s core curriculum and continuing education program.

For spas and clinics, the CIPI program can provide an in-house injury prevention trainer to help reduce workers’ comp claims, turnover and absenteeism among treatment staff.

Spas wanting to reduce their costs, schools interested in enhancing their curriculum and CE program, and manual therapists who value helping others and are excited about a new way to make money can find more information by contacting Save Your Hands!® at 877-424-0994 (toll-free) or syhcourses@saveyourhands.com, or by visiting http://www.saveyourhands.com/certified-injury-prevention-instructor.

About Save Your Hands!®

Kevin is a nationally certified Massage Therapist with 15-plus years of experience. He is also a well-known educator and administrator in the field. He is currently the National Program Director of Massage Therapy for Anthem Education Group.

Almost 2 years ago, Kevin was chosen as one of 9 people (http://www.mtbok.org/who_we_are.html) that would form a task force of massage therapy professionals to draft an initial Body of Knowledge for the Massage Therapy Profession. The task force was established by five of the major organizations that represent massage therapy: American Massage Therapy Association, Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals, the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards, the Massage Therapy Foundation, and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.

The 58-page document covers many aspects of the massage therapy profession: a description of the massage therapy field, a scope of practice statement, a section specifying the competencies expected of an entry-level massage therapist in terms of knowledge, skills and abilities, and a terminology section.

During Kevin’s presentation to AMTA members, he emphasized that the MTBOK is a living document that will develop and evolve over time in response to the needs of the profession.

Kevin facilitated discussions on many topics related to the MTBOK. The main issues of debate were concerning the potentially significant changes that educators might be expected to make in their massage therapy education curriculum in order to meet the standards of the initial draft of the MTBOK. Many supporters of the MTBOK spoke of how the document will lend more credibility to the profession (because so many other professions have an established body of knowledge already) and that the document may be interpreted by massage schools as a guide for standards of knowledge within the profession, and not necessarily as a set curriculum, in and of itself.
