legislative update!!!

I have been notified that our latest bill, HB 5749, which allows for massage therapists to continue working without a license until the state starts issuing them was introduced this week. The hearing will be Tuesday January 26th. If you know of people who would like to testify, please let the Board know. Ideally it would be people who have been denied work because of the snafu. The next Massage Therapy Board meeting is February 8th in Downtown Lansing. If you have an opinion that you would like voiced, you can write a formal letter outlining your concerns and send it to Rep. Vincent Gregory,who introduced this bill. It’s Time to Celebrate I am pleased to announce that on January 9, 2009 Governor Jennifer Granholm signed House Bill # 5651, making Michigan the 42nd state to regulate the massage therapy profession. The new law will now be referred to as Public Act #471 of 2008. This means the state will now create an 11-member State Board of Massage Therapy to oversee the practice of massage therapy. This new law is the result of years of effort by the AMTA-MI Chapter and representatives of other massage organizations to achieve fair regulation of massage therapy in our state.
